Dear Parents,

It has been a pleasure meeting your fourth grader today. I am really looking forward to having your child in my classroom this year, as well as having the opportunity to share the many aspects of your child’s fourth grade experience with you.

        Schedule:

We will run on a five-day schedule. Special classes according to the schedule are listed on a separate paper. Please be sure that your child is dressed appropriately and wearing sneakers on the day he/she has gym.

         Lunch/Breakfast:

The cost for lunch is $2.40 per day. Students will be using the same computerized lunch system as in previous years. Information about the lunch program and a September menu can be found on the Bangor website. We will be eating lunch from 11:20 to 11:50. The students can also purchase breakfast from 8:10-8:30. The daily cost for a student breakfast is $1.15.

          Snack:

Due to the time of our scheduled lunch period, the students will have time to eat a healthy snack during the morning. Please limit the number of items that your child brings for snack to one or two food/drink products.

          Discipline:

As well as the school’s rules, I will have my own classroom rules. The students and I will discuss these rules together. I believe in positive reinforcement and so the students will be rewarded for positive behavior. If there is a problem with your son/daughter’s behavior, I will be sure to contact you by phone or e-mail. Please feel free to contact me if you have any concerns about your child’s behavior or my discipline policy.

         Homework:

Homework assignments will be given on most school days. Homework is never busywork and is expected to be completed. Assignments are usually due the following day and are checked in class in a variety of ways. Each day, assignments will be listed on the board and copied to the students’ planner. Each student will be given a planner; this planner should go home each afternoon and return the next morning. You can be sure that your child is prepared by checking that the listed assignments have been completed. Assignments can also be found on the Homework Hotline.

          Absences/Notes:

Please send an excuse with your child when he/she returns to school following an illness. If you would like to have missed work picked-up or sent home with another student, please contact the office. If your child will be going somewhere other than his /her usual destinations after school, or if you need to pick your child up early for an appointment, please let me know in writing.

Although this is just the basics, I hope that this letter will be helpful for you and your child. Please keep it as a reference during the school year.

If you ever have any questions or concerns, please phone the school at 610-599-7014 and leave a message for me at ext. 6009. I check my messages before and after school, and will return your call promptly. You can also e-mail me. Please put your child’s name in the subject line. My e-mail address is: bodtmara@bangorsd.org

I am happy to be able to spend the coming year with your child, and look forward to meeting you. Parents Night is scheduled for Wednesday, September 11th from 6:00 until 8:00. Please take the time to talk with your child about school, studying facts, and looking over papers. Your support is a key factor in your child’s learning experience. Thank you for taking the time to read through this memo, and I will see you soon!

Sincerely,

Mrs. Rachel Bodtmann

Meet The Teacher

Meet Mrs. Bodtmann!

My name is Mrs. Rachel Bodtmann and I teach 4th grade at Washington Elementary. This is my twelfth year teaching in the Bangor Area School District. This is my second year as the Washington yearbook editor.

Educational Background

I was raised in Moscow, Pennsylvania and attended North Pocono High School. Following high school, I attended Moravian College in Bethlehem, where I earned a bachelor’s degree in English and my Elementary Education certification. I completed my master’s degree in classroom technology from Wilkes University. I continued to further my education and now have a masters degree +45 credits.

Personal Hobbies

I'm a mom to my two children- Shelby and Ben. They keep me very busy outside of school. Shelby dances and plays various sports. Ben is an active toddler who is into everything! I'm also a dedicated Red Sox fan. My family and I love going to Fenway Park and visiting Boston. My favorite hobby is running. I enjoy running in local 5k and 10k races and this October I will be running my first half marathon at the Runners World run in Bethlehem.  I also enjoy visiting family and friends, reading, making photobooks, and playing volleyball.

 My Family

My husband and I were married in June of 2011. We had a destination wedding on Lido Beach in Sarasota, Florida. We then traveled to St. Lucia. Soon after becoming homeowners we adopted a dog and named her Delilah. She is a westie mix and we love her. In October 2013 our daughter Shelby was born. I enjoy being a mom and watching her grow each day. In the spring of 2016 we sold our first home and bought a new home. We hope that this will be our "forever" home. We also had the opportunity to be filmed for the HGTV show House Hunters. It aired in October 2016. In May of 2017 our son Benjamin was born. Our family is now complete and we feel so blessed.

Remarkable Experiences

At the end of my sophomore year in college, I studied abroad with a group of students from Moravian. We traveled to five countries: Athens, Greece; the Island of Crete; Paris, France; Venice, Italy; and Berlin, Germany. It was an amazing experience learning about the different cultures and seeing the famous landmarks I had always dreamt about. I love traveling and am hoping to continue traveling.

Another interesting experience I’ve had is in the summer of 2007 I worked at a learning center in Bradenton, Florida called Kids R Kids. Besides providing an activity oriented day for children ages ranging from five to twelve, I was also given the opportunity to travel around various areas of Florida serving as a chaperone for the students field trips. My favorite trips was when I sailed on a pirate ship out to sea, visited the G-wiz science museum, the Mixon fruit farm, and the Tampa zoo. It was beautiful living in Florida and I loved being just minutes away from the beach.

Beliefs

~Students can improve their skills, abilities, and succeed.

~Learning is fun and continues throughout life.

~Parent involvement and open communication can only benefit students.

~Students should be treated equally and the teacher should know them on a professional and personal level.

~We need to prepare our students for the digital age and teach them 21st century learning skills by using technology whenever possible.

~Teaching isn’t just about instructing the students, it’s also about what they teach you.

~Effective instruction leads to all students attaining standards.

~Students are increasingly responsible for their own learning.

Behavioral Policy & Incentives

Behavioral Policy

I believe in positive reinforcement. The class will be rewarded for correct behavior. If I need to speak to someone repeatedly or a bad choice is made, then that student will be given a warning. If this student continues to have problems, they will lose 5 minutes of recess. If the behavior continues, a note will be sent home or a phone call will be made and other privileges will be lost. The students are responsible for their behavior and for the choices they make.

Incentives- Students who display responsible behavior are rewarded with a variety of incentives! Tickets will be given every Friday for those students who received no warnings during the week. On Friday a ticket will be picked and that student will win a prize! New this year- mystery prize reveal boards! Every time the students are caught doing something good- they will get to remove that post-it from the board. Once all post-its are removed, they will win the reward underneath! Our class will also have a marble jar. The class can earn marbles when everyone is displaying responsible behavior/good work habits. When the marble jar is full, we vote on our reward. (Pizza party, game day, no homework, etc.)

M ~ Math Games – We will be playing lots of math games with our Go Math! program. Ask your child to share some of the games they learn.

Q ~ Questions - If you have any questions or concerns, please write me a note, give me a call, or send me an email. No question is too small.

R ~ Rules - The students are expected to follow established rules in the classroom, special areas, and cafeteria. The breaking of rules may result in the loss of recess, a note or phone call home, or a visit to the principal's office.

S ~ Spelling - We will be using spelling words from the reading Journeys program. A spelling test will be given most Fridays. Students will always be given a list with their words and the lists can also be found on my webpage.

T ~ Tests – In 4th grade, tests are given in all subject areas. Upcoming tests will be noted on the student’s planners. Tests will come home almost every Friday in an envelope to be signed and returned.

Y ~ Yes You Can! - Try to encourage a positive attitude, a willingness to take risks, and self-confidence in your young learner.

Z ~ Zillions - There are so many exciting things to do and learn in fourth grade!
